I used #dmesg to burn the kali bootable image on a usb drive, forgetting that there were other important files on that usb as well. Is there a way to retrieve those files( these are file associate with window) ? I use vmware for kali linux. When I went into my window machine and try to access the usb, it told me to format the disk in drive D: before I can use it. But formatting it will delete all of my important files. Please help! Thanks
Welcome to our forums.
If you have written a bootable image to the USB drive, I’m afraid you have overwritten everything on it, and also destoyed the filesystem itself. You can give PhotoRec a try, but I assume the overwrite destroyed previous data, so don’t have high hopes that you will see it again.
