How to install Steam on Ubuntu 16.04 Xenial Xerus - LinuxConfig.org

PoisonFlame:
Running Steam on ubuntu 16.04 64-bit
STEAM_RUNTIME is enabled automatically
Startup - updater built Sep 20 2016 18:20:24
SteamUpdateUI: An X Error occurred

I get this error every time I try to open steam via terminal. What do I do?

Clockfeet:
I downloaded steam and followed your manual install guide. However when I write “steam&” in my terminal I get this:
Running Steam on ubuntu 16.04 64-bit
STEAM_RUNTIME is enabled automatically
Installing breakpad exception handler for appid(steam)/version(0)
libGL error: unable to load driver: r600_dri.so
libGL error: driver pointer missing
libGL error: failed to load driver: r600
libGL error: unable to load driver: swrast_dri.so
libGL error: failed to load driver: swrast

Christian:

Hey! steam pops up for me but whenever I click it it blinks in the launcher for a few seconds then closes. I have tried both methods.

Any help?

PtahX @PtahX -> Christian:
Try running as root if it works check your permissions :slight_smile:

Robert Ruedisueli -> PtahX @PtahX:
NEVER run steam as root.

PtahX @PtahX:
This works well with 16.10 on a fresh install as well. Only issue I had was I needed to change “Repository – Ubuntu Software – Download” too “Main Server” as it had dependency issues as follows. See you in game :slight_smile:

steam:i386 : Depends: libc6:i386 (>= 2.15) but it is not going to be installed
Depends: libstdc++6:i386 (>= 4.3) but it is not going to be installed
Depends: libx11-6:i386 but it is not going to be installed
Depends: libudev1:i386 but it is not going to be installed
Depends: libxinerama1:i386 but it is not going to be installed
Depends: libtxc-dxtn0:i386
Depends: libgl1-mesa-dri:i386 but it is not going to be installed
Depends: libgl1-mesa-glx:i386 but it is not going to be installed
Recommends: zenity:i386

Steam still won’t work for me. Every time I click on it this pops up: “Couldn’t set up Steam data - please contact technical support”. Is there any fix for this? And when they say contact technical support, do they mean Steam’s tech support???

Ambar Hasbiyatmoko:
hi … thanks…
works well on ‘fresh’ ubuntu 16.04 LTS
@anyone : don’t forget to install VGA driver, first …

You need the proper GPU drivers to run Steam.
Which GPU does he have?

Sanne Berkhuizen:
LD_PRELOAD='/usr/$LIB/libstdc++.so.6' DISPLAY=:0 steam

User:

sudo apt-get install steam
It says, that I already have the newest version.
I open steam but i doesnt show up and close by itself.
Please help me.

p-tates -> User:
Try it in the terminal, that should show the reason it’s not starting up.
just type: steam
And press enter
and see whether you get the output message, and what you can do with it.

User -> p-tates:
i got this
Running Steam on ubuntu 16.04 64-bit
STEAM_RUNTIME is enabled automatically
Installing breakpad exception handler for appid(steam)/version(0)
and help?

p-tates -> User:
You don’t have the correct drivers installed. You probably need to install the Nvidia drivers.
Search for the application “software & updates” and go to the “additional drivers” tab. Select the Nvidia binary driver and select “apply changes”

kashjdkjh → bob dole:
you’re missing drivers, and can you please stop using kali as your main OS?

rahuld:
Done! This post helped me, Thanks!

Darkhan Doskul:
The best “How to”. Thanks a lot! Was struggling with steam installation until I found this post

Andrew:
It tells me “sudo not found” when I put in what it tells me to

Obrigado! :smiley:

JDM85:

Look, I am used to windows, and know NOTHING about Ubuntu. My comp had to have its memory wiped and they put Ubuntu in because I didn’t want to spend $`100 on another Windows OS.
…so how do I do all this programming stuff you have to do with Ubuntu? I just want to play my steam games again!
