How to reset lost root password on Ubuntu 18.04 Bionic Beaver Linux - LinuxConfig.org

The first step is to reboot into the GRUB menu. If Ubuntu 18.04 Bionic Beaver is the only operating system installed you need to keep pressing SHIFT for the GRUB menu to show up.

By “keep pressing” SHIFT do you mean “repeatedly press” or “hold down”? (I can’t get into GRUB. The Asus logo only appears for a half second or so. Should I press be during or after this?)

This is scary and IMO should be modified to not be able to accomplish. Anyone can steal a PC with Ubuntu installed, reset the password, and access private information. It’s not right!

If this is your worry, you have the option to encrypt the entire HDD.

So I did this, and had to delete my keyrings afterward because it kept asking for as they didn’t match. It was just an extra step I had to make, I don’t know how many people encountered it or why I did…
