what am i missing?

Hi alk4444,

Welcome to our forums.

Is this system a server install without a GUI, and you try to add GUI to it?

no. it is ubuntu running in WSL on win10pro64 v2004

You are missing systemd, which is not yet available in WSL, as explained in this note.

so, is there a way to install a desktop gui in WSL?

@alk4444 I’ve never tried WSL myself: I quit using Windows in 2009 (switched to Linux, which I had been using in dual with Windows since 1995) and never looked back. But there are several tutorials out there explaining how to do it (there are different ways). One that you may find easier is this video tutorial, but this text answer and this text tutorial may be useful, too.
