Started computer, it asked for password (usually not required), but with correct password I still cannot get in

Hello,

I’m new here and completely new to problem-solving in Linux.

I have Linux Lite 5.4 installed. When I start my computer, no password is required. Now it needs password to proceed. When correct password is entered, it jumps back to password screen.

I’m only a user with no IT background, so I practically no nothing about Linux. (My husband, who dealt with all computer-related issues, has recently passed away and no one can help me.)

Can you help please?

Thanks a lot!

Hello,

It might be that you dropped out to recovery mode on boot. We need more information. Please take a picture of the screen and send it here. From there I will be able to navigate you better what to do. DO not worry about the missing password. As long as the system is not encrypted we still can recover password.

thank you

Thanks. This is the screen after entering the password.

Can you please specify where have you already entered the password? What we are seeing is a regular user login screen. So I assume you wish to login as this user. What password have you used? We need to determine whether you have root(admin) password or not. If you already have root password than we simply reset this user’s password. If you do not have root password we will need to take a longer route and reset root password and then reset user password. Please provide and screenshot/picture of the screen where you have already entered password. Or is it his screen but your password did not work?

BTW: Do you have an account on this PC? Can you change to a different user?

Thank you!

There is only one account, David’s, he set up the admin/root password. No other user has been set up, so this is the only screen there is.

Ok. Since you mentioned that you are not a IT person, the resetting root password might not be as easy. I do not want to underestimate you but many things may go wrong. The last thing we want is to accidentally lock out ourselfs from the system completely with no way of return. In this case it is recommended to do a low level system backup in case something goes wrong so we can always revert back. However, making this backup also requires some level of knowledge of the system.

Having said that, I have no problem to guide you, however, I strongly recommend that you do backup. Perhaps find somebody who can come and help you out on site.

Let me know what you want to do. The system is not important but the data on the system are! It is also possible simply recover the from the system only.

Thank you, I am grateful for the advice.

I will try to find someone to help me with the backup and would appreciate your help afterwards.

ok. no problem. Low level backup is crucial so you can always revert back in case of any issues
