Now screen black again. No reaction on keyboard, screen gives message “no input signal”

Let’s see if failsafe mode works. Reboot the computer, and hold shift to get to the grub menu. From there select recovery mode (usually the 2nd line). You’ll get another menu, where you can select the line first line, say “ok” to the note about not full graphical support, and see if you can boot in to the graphical interface.

Seem like you were too fast. This looks like the boot menu. Select “hard drive”, press enter and hold the shift to get to the grub menu.
You should see lines like these:
Ubuntu, with Linux 4.15.0-33-generic
Ubuntu, with Linux 4.15.0-33-generic (recovery mode)
You may have other kernel versions, and more lines. Select the upppermost from the ones marked as “recovery mode”. From there, you can follow the instructions from my previous post.
